Blazing Star Wildflower Seed Company
Lisa and Renny Grilz - Owners
Blazing Star Wildflower Seed Company, located in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan, has been providing high-quality native wildflower seeds since 1992. As a second-generation family-owned farm business run by Lisa and Renny Grilz, the company is committed to offering sustainably wild-harvested seeds and those grown in dedicated seed production plots. Their seeds are specifically adapted to the challenging Canadian prairie climate, thriving in hot summers, cold winters, and drought conditions with minimal maintenance.
Blazing Star’s wildflower seeds are essential for enhancing soil quality, controlling erosion, supporting pollinators, and providing critical habitats for wildlife. They offer a wide variety of native seed collections, including pollinator-friendly mixes designed to attract beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies, which are vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Renny Grilz, a recipient of the Nuffield Canada Agricultural Scholarship, uses his global research in agriculture and ecological restoration to further the company’s mission of prairie conservation and supporting the growth of the native seed industry. Blazing Star’s work not only helps conserve local ecosystems but also educates the public on the ecological importance of native plants.
The company has been selling seeds online since 1997, making it easy for customers across Canada to access their diverse product offerings. Through their website, www.growwildflowers.ca, Blazing Star promotes the use of native wildflowers to help conserve and restore prairie landscapes and enhance our urban areas with native plant species. Lisa and Renny’s passion for conservation and education continues to inspire individuals and organizations to take part in conserving our prairies.

The nursery has grown to include a team of fifteen people working to produce approximately 200 genetically local native species grown in containers, plugs, and provided as seed. Our plants are grown without herbicides and pesticides. The nursery specializes in the restoration and ecology of Garry oak ecosystems (Prairie-Oak ecosystems) and meadowscaping. The plants and seeds we provide are native to a variety of habitats on southern Vancouver Island, including meadows, woodlands, forests, wetlands, beaches and more. We make native seeds available through custom and pre-designed blends and individual seed packets. We welcome people to come to our nursery location for retail sales and also offer wholesale and professional restoration advice for larger projects.

Akène, culture forestière
Phillipe Denis
Founded in 2020, Akène is a Quebec-based company dedicated to the production and distribution of a wide selection of high-quality native plant seeds. Our mission is to support biodiversity by making locally grown and harvested native seeds more accessible to individuals, municipalities, and organizations involved in ecological restoration. We believe in the crucial role that native plants play in restoring ecosystems and sustaining local wildlife.
While many of our products are designed for private gardeners and plant enthusiasts, we also work closely with native plant producers, municipalities, and various groups involved in ecological restoration projects. Our seeds are carefully cultivated and harvested to ensure genetic diversity and adaptability to the Quebec climate, making them ideal for both small-scale personal projects and larger restoration efforts.
At Akène, we are committed to promoting the use of native plants not only for their ecological benefits but also for their aesthetic, edible, and medicinal qualities. Our vision is to empower communities to take an active role in regeneration by reintroducing native species into urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.

Swallowtail Native Plants
Andrea D’Silva - Founder
Swallowtail Native Plants specializes in Ontario native wildflower and grass seeds for the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands ecoregion. This region extends from Toronto to Ottawa and is one of the most densely populated areas in Canada. Due to increasing development and habitat loss many of our pollinator species and wildlife populations are declining. Swallowtail Native Plants helps gardeners and restoration professionals create habitat and increase biodiversity. Through providing native seeds we hope to help restore ecosystems and our natural environment.
Our 13-acre property is in the heart of Toronto’s Greenbelt on the Oak Ridges Moraine. We locally source our seed so it will be adapted to the environmental conditions and seasonal weather patterns of our region. Our seed has high levels of genetic diversity which creates resilient plant populations.
Andrea D’Silva founded Swallowtail Native Plants in 2022. She uses her background in education, botany, and restoration ecology to teach people how to grow native plants from seed. She is particularly fond of keystone species such as asters and goldenrods. These plants support pollinators and insects, which in turn support birds and other wildlife.
At Swallowtail Native Plants we believe that a small handful of seeds has the power to connect people with nature and heal our land.

Tamarack Farms
Ryan Pengelly, Alexandra Lozada, Carol Pengelly and Harvey Pengelly
Tamarack Farms is nestled in the rolling hills and forests of Riding Mountain near Erickson, Manitoba in Treaty 2 territory.
Established in the 1970s, the Pengelly family has grown a diverse range of plants including several native grasses and forbs, conventional grains and oilseeds, tame forage crops, and hay for local cattle feed. Fitting our farming activities into the natural and biodiverse landscape is very important to us, so as to maintain local elk populations, aspen parkland forests, and beaver ponds and creeks.
Tamarack Farms is now operated by Ryan Pengelly and Alexandra Lozada with ongoing support from Carol and Harvey Pengelly. Currently, we focus on larger scale production (150 acres) of a couple brome grasses and one sunflower and supply wholesale buyers in Canada and the United States for reclamation projects.
